The history of an amphitheater
About fifteen years ago, the 1800 Roeden site encountered an accumulation of stones and excavations revealed remnants of a Roman theater. City archaeologist Jerzy Gawronsky determined that it must have been an ancient amphitheater from the 2nd century AD, completely turning the historiography of Amsterdam upside down. Under his direction, many interesting finds have since been made, including a large quantity of Roman glass and ceramics that can be dated fairly precisely between 135 and 190 A.D. Since then, restoration work has been underway and the artifacts have been handed over to the Amsterdam Historical Museum, which is going to furnish an entirely new wing for them, as they have extended the origins and history of Amsterdam for about a thousand years.
The current use of the theater
The restored remains have been given in trust to the 1800 Roeden. The popularly coined title “the Coliseum of Amsterdam” has long been in vogue and is regularly used by the catering company at the site - aptly named “Het Rijk van de Keizer” - as a venue for weddings and other festive ceremonies.
